Umbrella Project Hosts Cultural Exchange Program to Benefit Havasupai School Students

May 20, 2019 – Waddell, AZ

On May 13, 2019, ten Havasupai School students from Supai, Arizona, spent the day at Canyon View High School in Waddell, Arizona participating in workshops including clay making, agriculture, watercolor painting and learning how to design key rings using a 3D printer.

This event is part of the Umbrella Project’s multi-year Cultural Arts Program to help teach Havasupai students of their rich Native American culture and heritage. The Havasupai School is located in Supai, Arizona considered the most remote location in the United States. The school only teaches English and Math to students from kindergarten through the 8th grade.

The goal of the Cultural Exchange Program is to provide both Havasupai and Canyon View school children with an opportunity to learn about each other’s culture. The day started with a school tour conducted by Canyon View High School Principal Nowlin where the kids got an up-close look at the school’s full-service media center and flexible, open-spaced learning environments. They had breakfast and lunch in the modern lunchroom and The Umbrella Project coordinated a full day for the Havasupai and Canyon View kids at the Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium in Litchfield Park.

The Havasupai students were accompanied by Cultural Arts teacher Emmanuel Manajawja who has been instrumental in assisting The Umbrella Project with the Cultural Arts program at Havasupai School.
