Umbrella Project Delivers Language Arts Book To Benefit Havasupai School Students

August 20, 2020 – Supai, AZ

To complete their multi-year Cultural Arts Program, Umbrella Project board members travelled to Supai, Arizona to present their Language Arts book to the Havasupai Tribal Council.

The Language Arts book was created to support the Havasupai School’s Cultural Arts program and help kindergarten through 8th graders learn their Havasupai language while increasing their skill and understanding of the English language.

The Umbrella Project, Inc. was given permission from the Havasupai Tribe to use A Dictionary of The Havasupai Language by Leannie Hinton, bilingual Education Program, and the Havasupai Community, 1984 as a reference source in the development of this book.

The book includes the full Havasupai Alphabet with English counterparts. It begins simply with English to Havasupai words with full color pictures. The book is broken into groups including:

  • Animals
  • Bugs
  • Reptiles
  • Baskets
  • Birds
  • The Human Body
  • Calendar Month of the Year
  • Moon Phases
  • Colors
  • Constellations
  • Corn
  • Desert
  • Desert Southwest Tribes
  • Places and Things
  • Plants of the Southwest Desert

The book is written at a level where all students – from kindergarten through 8th grade – can benefit from the information.
